Henley Royal Regatta Headquarters have recently been recognised by Historic England with the designation of Grade II Listed Status.
MEA were honoured to have provided quantity surveying services to this renowned building which was designed in 1984 – 1986 by The Terry Farrell Partnership. This listing ensures that this unique building will now be protected as one of the most significant examples of Post-Modernism architecture in the UK.
Following its completion in 1986 the project went on to win a number of awards including the 1987 Financial Times Architectural Award, the 1988 Civic Trust Award and the 1988 RIBA Award.
The Henley Royal Regatta Headquarters building, Henley-on-Thames was listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
Architectural interest:
– A festive, yet stately, civic building in the post-modern classical idiom, combining a reinterpretation of the temple form with Thames boathouses and other types of riverside architecture.
– A significant scheme by Terry Farrell, a leading British architect and exponent of Post-Modernism.
Historic interest:
– The administrative headquarters of the Henley Royal Regatta, an important sporting event in the country’s history endowed with royal patronage.
– A rare example of a permanent building entirely devoted to an annual sporting fixture.
Group value:
– With a number of listed buildings on the opposite bank of the river and with Henley Bridge (Grade I), and with The Grandstand for Henley Royal Regatta (Grade II).
