Chandos House is a double finalist at the inaugural Bath Property Awards

MEA are delighted that St John’s Foundation has been shortlisted as double finalists at the inaugural Bath Property Awards. The redevelopment of Chandos House has made the shortlist in both the ‘Residential Development’ and the ‘Transformation’ categories.

The prestigious Bath Property Awards have been launched to celebrate the dynamic Bath property sector and the winners will be announced at the event which takes place on 23rd November at the Apex Hotel in Bath.

Chandos House is listed Grade II* and situated within the Bath Conservation Area and World Heritage Site. Dating from about 1730, it is located in the city centre within the historic St John’s Hospital site.

The building previously provided 7 small apartments arranged over 5 floors but most were poorly laid out and in dire need of renovation. St John’s appointed a design team to maximise use of available space, improve energy efficiency and improve accessibility within the constraints of a Grade II* listed building. The project was completed on time and approximately 10% under budget due to a combination of continual team collaboration, risk reduction strategies and positive thinking throughout which led to a successful outcome far exceeding the Client’s initial brief.

The transformation of Chandos House has created seven elegant apartments, offered to people aged over 65 on a lifelong-lease model. It represents not just the transformation of a Grade II* listed building but a unique housing purchase and independent living option for older people in Bath.

Chandos House was a project that personifies everything that the St John’s Foundation do by helping older people live independent lives and in a way that both generates funds for the charity’s wider work and has protected and enhanced an important property in Bath.

Established in 1174, St John’s has been providing support for almost 850 years. They work to build resilient communities by supporting people to overcome challenges, improve their lives and live as independently as possible.

MEA has a strong relationship with St John’s delivering both Project Management and Quantity Surveying services on their recent construction projects. We are delighted that St John’s has been shortlisted in the Bath Property Awards and we are honoured to have the privilege of working with them.
