MEA were delighted to provide Quantity Surveying services to the Richmond Fellowship on the recently completed refurbishment project in Oxford Road, Abingdon. The new building will provide living accommodation to people receiving support in their recovery towards independence. The converted semi-detached properties date back to 1874 and now provides 14 accommodation units with en-suite facilities and shared communal spaces. 2 ground floor bedrooms are fully accessible for residents with disabilities, and there is a new separate ‘pod’ to provide separate staff office, meeting and sleeping space.
Designed by Macallan Penfold architects, the project included the refurbishment and remodelling of the original Victorian building and extensions, and incorporates significant upgrades to the fabric of the building to meet current standards, whilst maintaining and enhancing the character of the original building. The building provides a comfortable, uplifting and homely place for the residents to live which is set within a large garden that enhances the environment of the home and provides opportunities for the residents to undertake further therapeutic activities.
Richmond Fellowship is one of the largest voluntary sector providers of mental health support in England. It is part of Recovery Focus, an expert group charities inspiring recovery together. It provides supported housing schemes which comprise shared accommodation where people have their own private rooms but share kitchens and living rooms. This creates a community spirit that can help people develop their independent living and social skills in a safe environment. It is available to adults aged over 18, who are experiencing a mental health problem and have a need for housing related support.
